The Barbadian reported on the appeal of Thomas Day, a labour recruitment agent who had been recruiting Barbadians to work in British Guiana. His activities sparked concern among Barbados’ planter class over the potential loss of workers seeking better wages and opportunities abroad. Despite efforts to restrict his recruitment, thousands of Barbadians would later migrate to British Guiana in search of improved economic prospects. (British Guiana is the historical colonial name for the territory that became the independent nation of Guyana in 1966)
