[00:00:07] Speaker B: History I am Achiri Adams, history teacher at the Coleridge and Paris school and a graduate student in the Department of History and Philosophy at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill today in Beijing History March 27, 1827 the first steam engine vessel arrives in Barbados in the early 18 hundreds maritime vessels which called it Barbados, were typically sail powered schooners, sloops, cutters and other types of sailing ships. The interisland schooner was the main vessel used in that critical interiorland trade which facilitated the movement of food, fuel and lumber between the islands. However, on this day, March 27, 1827, the docks at Carlisle Bay came alive with many spectators who came out to catch a glimpse of the first steam engine boat to reach Barbados. According to a report in the Barbados newspaper, the atmosphere was jovial as throngs of spectators lined the docks to welcome Captain Jones and the Libertodor. The newspaper reported that the cargo ship glided easily into the docks. The sleekness of the vessel allowed it to chart its course without the use of sail and manpower as it was being powered by a 50 hp steam engine. The vessel sailed 30 hours from St. Vincent and brought a cargo of heights, indigo and cocoa for Mrs. M. Caven and Company, a prominent barbadian merchant company for which a lane in Bridgestone has been named. Just hours earlier, another ship, the Hamilton, which was captained by Colonel Hamilton, also arrived on our shores. With the use of steam power, the invention of the steamboats would change the tide of sailing between the islands. The advent of vessels powered by steam engines rather than the wind would shorten travel times, expand trading opportunities and encourage increased levels of interisland leisure travel. On this day, March 27, 1827, the beautiful steam vessel the Liberta door arrived in Carlisle Bay. The arrival of this vessel attracted significant public curiosity and was a banner event in the maritime history of Barbados.
