The Barbadian reported on the departure of William Hart Coleridge, the first Bishop of Barbados, whose leadership helped guide the island through the turbulent transition from slavery to emancipation. Arriving in Barbados in 1824 during a period of intense social unrest and resistance to abolition, Bishop Coleridge worked to expand church membership and education opportunities for the enslaved and formerly enslaved population.
