The Barbadian recounted the story of an apprentice labourer who sought to purchase his complete freedom by having the remaining value of his labour assessed. Claiming severe rheumatism and limited ability to work, his service was ultimately valued at £15. An anonymous correspondent later questioned whether the man had exaggerated his condition to secure a lower price, offering a revealing glimpse into the complexities of Barbados’ apprenticeship system and the lengths individuals took to gain their freedom.
