On March 21, 1922, a public appeal was made to preserve gas lighting in Bridgetown as the city transitioned toward electrification. Writing in the Barbados Agricultural Reporter, Professor J.P. de Albuquerque advocated for the continued role of the Barbados Gas Company, emphasizing gas as a reliable source for cooking, heating, and even lighting when properly developed.
