This is Dario Fort, history graduate of the University of the West Indies, Care Hill campus. On this day, November 13th, 1838, the alarm of fire was raised at the baking house of Mr. Schmidt, located in Prince William Henry Street, Bridgetown. Evidently, wood coal had been placed directly over an oven, leading to it being ignited. This was between the hours of 2 and 3 o'clock in the evening. Despite no flames being visible, there was a significant amount of smoke, thus raising fear among the neighbours.
