The Barbados Workers’ Union was officially registered, bringing thousands of Barbadian workers across 23 occupational divisions under organised representation. Led in its early years by figures including Grantley Adams, Hilton Coulston and Hugh Springer, the union secured improvements in wages, working conditions and labour rights. Eighty-five years later, the BWU remains an important institution in Barbados’ labour movement and social partnership.
