On October 6, 1950, the Barbados Advocate highlighted calls for a British Red Cross presence in Barbados following the island’s humanitarian support for hurricane-stricken Antigua. Five years later, on October 6, 1955, pioneering Barbadian surgeon Dr. Velma Scantlebury was born. She would go on to become the first Black female transplant surgeon in the United States and perform more than 2,000 transplants.
